Foundation Skills Level 1
Foundation Skills is a pattern found in Maori culture from weaving and carving.
Foundation Skills has significant spiritual and educational meanings. The steeped pattern symbolises levels of attainment and advancement and the growth of tāne and wāhine, striving ever upwards and for betterment.
It represents the process of scaffolding (knowing your ākonga ) as ākonga are provided with a framework and support to enable them to acquire new skills and knowledge, and consolidate these before attempting the next challenge.

Poutama offers learners the opportunity to gain the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1.
The purpose of the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 1) is to provide people with focussed skills, capabilities, knowledge and attributes needed to engage or re-engage with learning.
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Operate in familiar, structured environments.
- Identify and develop self-management and resilience strategies to organise personal life, maintain well-being and continue learning.
- Interact appropriately with people from their own and other cultures, individually and in group environments, including work and community.
- Apply basic skills in literacy and numeracy and digital technology, as well as a range of other literacies, in structured and familiar contexts.
- Identify leadership qualities of a rangatira, and reflect on how these relate to their own strengths, personal goals and future pathways
The qualification acknowledges the primacy of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in programme delivery and design.
Foundation Skills is a health, wellness and leadership programme featuring four modules built upon a Maori world view.

Applicants must be 16 to 24 years of age.
Applicants 15 years of age may enrol with a Ministry of Education exdmption.
