Foundation Skills is a pattern found in Maori culture from weaving and carving.

Foundation Skills has significant spiritual and educational meanings. The steeped pattern symbolises levels of attainment and advancement and the growth of tāne and wāhine, striving ever upwards and for betterment.

It represents the process of scaffolding (knowing your ākonga ) as ākonga are provided with a framework and support to enable them to acquire new skills and knowledge, and consolidate these before attempting the next challenge.
